Biero Bar

Most bars have happy hours, or times during the day when the cheapest beer on tap becomes even cheaper. Some bars have excellent beers on tap, dispensing pots and pints of craft beer for pretty steep prices. In a move that's either genius or extreme stupidity, Biero Bar on 525 Little Lonsdale St has combined the two, offering on Wednesday nights an entire happy evening where beers that would normally fetch fifteen dollars per pint are sold for a third the price.

On the fringes of the Melbourne's law district, Biero Bar combines high-class chandeliers with a gritty urban aesthetic that gets stronger the further in you go. At the very back is a smoking room where the seats have been replaced with beer kegs. It's as if the bar is trying to cover all its bases – like a mullet, it's all business up front with a party in the back.



The prices on a Wednesday night – five dollars a pint – are almost criminal. That, combined with the quality of the beer, means it's deceptively easy to get drunk. Set yourself a limit or you'll find you're in no state to walk home, let alone drive. The beer lineup is different each week, ensuring that no two visits to Biero Bar are the same. Here's a tip: go with your friends and sample each others' beers. That way you can appreciate the spectrum of brews on offer while retaining relative sobriety.

You'll want to be sober when you try the food, as Biero Bar's lunch and dinner menu is fantastic. Try the ocean trout for lunch or the chicken and potato croquettes for dinner – both go well with a beer or a glass of wine.

Aside from a few minor complaints – the place gets fairly busy on Wednesday nights, for instance – Biero Bar holds up in every respect. It's got classy dιcor, excellent food options, a relaxed atmosphere; and really, where else can you turn a ten-dollar note into two full pints of craft beer?
