Melbourne has some great playgrounds but scattered amongst them are some huge disappointments.

Top of the list is the playground at Edwardes Lake Park in Reservoir. There are plenty of elements to make it a great place to take the kids, such as a full size A2 class locomotive on display. The train is fenced off but it is possible to enter the driver's compartment and pretend you are racing Thomas around the island of Sodor.

After a ride on the train you can wander over to the creek with a bridge where there are ducks and other water birds.

There are a range of facilities to make a day of it including shelters, BBQ equipment and toilets.

Then take a walk in the huge grassy park with a large lake. Bring along some pocket money since the ice-cream van is a regular visitor to the park.

Those daring to head over to the playground area will find a set of derelict, old equipment with as much appeal as a two day old sandwich. This location is crying out for a super new playground to which kids and families would flock to.

There is a scarcity of quality fenced playgrounds in Melbourne and Pitcher Park in Alphington doesn't enhance the list.

It covers a large area, is fully fenced with a child-proof gate and has some natural shade from a tree but the playground equipment is in such a bad state that it is difficult to tell whether this is a junkyard or a playground.

There are other playgrounds which have more rust than Wally's scrap yard and necessitate a tetanus shot before venturing in. However, we think that these two playgrounds have the most unfulfilled potential.

What do you think is the most disappointing playground in Melbourne?

I had a laugh when I saw the photo that fronts your article Ian, my housemates and I cycle past that train everyday. :) Yes, the playground does need a facelift. I did see kids playing on it over the weekend, which I havent seen before. Great article.
