Green Carousel at the South Street Seaport

Children of all ages (and the young at heart) have a fun ride awaiting them at Pier 17. The South Street Seaport Carousolar is the only one of its kind in the world. Hop on one of the pristine-white wooden horses on the refurbished vintage carousel, and enjoy a five-minute ride. Once it stops, stand in line and go again—it's free.


Surrounding the Carousolar are GE's CdTe thin film panels that produce electricity by harnessing power from the sun, while white, blue and green TETRA Contour LED lights give it an ultra-cool, colorful accent (especially at night). The innovative features make for an environmentally friendly ride, one fit for the 21st century.


For those who can't help but multitask while waiting for their young ones to finish the ride, hook your mobile phone or iPod to one of the solar-powered charging stations. While you wait and watch as your electronic devices recharge, and the kids laugh with glee—grab a seat, sip your favorite beverage from a nearby vendor and unwind. It's not a hard feat to achieve—after all, you're in the midst of New York's maritime past, the gateway to the Harbor—where fleets of windjammers like the moored Peking ship once docked with goods for trade.


Don't postpone your trip to downtown Manhattan for too long, though. Unlike the many permanent attractions at the South Street Seaport, the Carousolar is only there until September 7, 2011.
