Steam Train Sunday - The Workshops Rail Museum

For some reason, the sound of a steam train puffing along and giving a whistle just makes me smile. Once a month, Queensland Museum and the Workshops Rail Museum allow the general public to ride one of their restored steam trains.

Steam Train Sunday takes about an hour to complete its loop (destinations vary depending on the day) beginning at Roma St Station, Brisbane.

We took the kids and grandparents for a special surprise and all were suitably impressed. We booked early and ended up assigned to the "sleeper" carriage all decked out with polished wood and leather seats.

The grandparents relished the opportunity to visit the engine and explain how the coal gets shovelled in to make the train puff along. And then we slowly chugged through tunnels and across bridges pretending to be old fashioned ladies in our first class carriage. Very nostalgic and a must for anyone with a Thomas the Tank Engine fan in the family!


After we reluctantly disembarked we wandered through Roma St Parklands. The flowers in Spectacle Garden are definitely worth visiting. And the kids needed an ice cream and a run around in the playground after being on the train.
