The Whispering Wall

Do you have a secret to share with someone? Like to see something different? Enjoy testing things out? If so, next time you visit the Barossa Valley region take a drive out to Williamstown where on the outskirts you will come across 'The Whispering Wall'. The Whispering Wall is iconic to the Barossa Valley, it has always been a popular tourist destination and will leave visitors impressed with the engineering of the Wall and, of course, its sound abilities.



The Whispering Wall is the retaining wall of the Barossa Reservoir built between 1899 and 1903. As well as its first and foremost function, The Whispering Wall is now a popular and a must see tourist attraction. The wall has attracted much attention nationally and internationally for its revolutionary engineering, although presently the retaining wall is best known for its commonly used title 'The Whispering Wall'. It has now kept this title as people are able to clearly communicate from one side to the other, while the wall spreads 140m long there is only the need of a whisper. It is a wonderful experience to test out the walls acoustic ability and to communicate fluently over such a long distance. The design of the wall and its resulting secret function gives off a little magic vibe and surprise for all ages to enjoy and test out.



While you visit this national landmark you can read up and learn about the history and facts of the thirty six metre standing wall. Opposite to the information boards on the other side of the parking area sits old machinery that was used in the design and construction process of the Wall. Public toilets are close on site, there is a large car parking area and picnic areas. Bring up a few snacks or pack a picnic lunch to eat in the park area facing the water, or you may choose to sit in the large undercover picnic area by the toilets. Even though The Whispering Wall is quite a popular attraction you can still appreciate that it holds a peaceful atmosphere, along with this is the scenery that surrounds you, the natural Australian bush setting.





If you would like to visit one of the most famous dams in the world and communicate perfectly with people through the curved concrete of The Whispering Wall then its only a short drive from Williamstown and about an hours drive North of Adelaide.

Whether you wish to test the wall out for yourself or are simply interested in its bold design, then it may be an idea to escape for the day. The Whispering Wall would make a great outing for any group or for anyone.
