The Chinatown Mall in Fortitude Valley is set to sizzle as Chinese New Year celebrations farewell the Dragon and welcome in the
Year of the Snake. The mall will be set alight with traditional Chinese colours, sights and sounds creating a vibrant, high energy, festive atmosphere.
The 10 day long festival kicks off on Friday 8th February at 5.00pm with a traditional
Chinese Lion Dance to farewell the Dragon, and at 7.30pm a dance to celebrate the coming of the Snake. In between, witness firecracker and Tai Chi demonstrations, a Chinese classical music performance and traditional puppet show. The evening continues with a Vietnamese Hat Dance and a martial arts demonstration, culminating in a performance showcase of Euroasian talents.
The festival continues in this vein for a full 10 days with a non-stop programme of traditional dance, music, arts, firecrackers and demonstrations of cooking, Tai Chi and martial arts. Don your favourite red garb and enjoy traditional dances from China, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines. Or for something entirely different, check out
Vegetarian Music on Saturday 9th February (7.15-7.30pm) - a performance of traditional Chinese music where the only instruments used are various pieces of vegetable.
Under the ambient light of 3D lanterns, wander the market stalls and feast on traditional foods from a selection of food stalls and restaurants. Learn the art of Feng Shui or the health benefits of Tai Chi. Soak up the fabulous festive atmosphere amongst the bright colors and traditional sights, sounds and smells of Chinese culture.
