Ever since the the Earl of Sandwich was too busy at the gaming table to get up for a meal and told a passing servant to bring him a slice of meat between two slices of bread the 'Sandwich' has been a staple of every one's diet.

What makes a good sandwich? More importantly, what makes a great sandwich? Well, fresh bread, fresh ingredients, a good blend of tastes and accompaniments.

Now the Mundaring Hotel has a reputation for serving a great sandwich, they have won or been runners up or finalists in the WA Pub's competition for 'Favourite Steak Sandwich' for the last three years.

So I popped in to try Chef John's latest steak sandwich and entry in the 2012 competition. The latest was arrived at by a consensus of patrons who tried the half-dozen or so possibilities, so what is being entered is the favourite of the favourites - what a bit of luck.

Chef John

The final choice of the patrons is an absolute cracker of a sandwich - fresh, Turkish bread, stuffed with tender beef steak sliced thinly, fresh salad of diced beetroot, three or four lettuces, fresh tomato, caramelised onions and a lovely light dressing.

The whole sandwich comes with a salad and a generous serve of chips. Served nice and hot, the sandwich is a winner in my opinion. Tasty, tender and delicious.

The other up side of these sandwiches is that you can only get them at Mundaring Hotel, which is a great place to eat. It has all the charm of its Victorian origins and the dining area has the happy buzz of satisfied diners as they tuck into their food (which includes a lot more than the steak sandwich).

As well as the food, there is a wide range of beer, both bottled and on tap in addition to a good variety of wines and an incredible range of Whiskey, Whisky and Bourbons.

I have already voted and got my chance at $500 and I advise you to do the same - but whatever else you do, do try Chef John's great steak sandwich.

We have had the discussion many times at pubs that when salad is put into a steak sandwich isnt it then a steakburger rather than a Steak sandwich. Some traditionalist also suggest it should only be in toast.
